Punk Sounds Strange from an Armchair

My first post on this zine couldn’t be about anyone else but them.
There are concerts you watch. And then there are the ones that hit you straight in the face. With Sonic Youth, it was never just a live show. It was something physical, slow-burning, almost hypnotic. The songs moved forward in waves, guitars scraping, ringing, building tension. You could feel the sound in your stomach. I’m not the kind of person who dances at gigs, but with them it was impossible to stay still.
I had the chance to see them twice.
The first time was at Les Escales in Saint-Nazaire, in August 2008. At the same time there was this huge exhibition around the band: Sonic Youth etc. : Sensational Fix. You realized how far beyond rock music the band had gone. There was contemporary art, video work, album covers, collaborations, a whole different way of thinking about music.

What really stayed with me was discovering how close they were to Nirvana. It made me see Last Days by Gus Van Sant in a different light. In the film, Kim Gordon appears almost like the last lucid presence in the middle of the chaos. She tries to pull the character inspired by Kurt Cobain away from that doomed rock star image and that deep loneliness. I don’t know what came from reality and what came from fiction, but the scene felt raw and deeply sad.
The second time was in Paris in October 2009, at the Palais des Congrès de Paris. A totally absurd place to see Sonic Youth. And the weirdest part was that everybody was sitting down.
Noise rock played in front of rows of armchairs. Punk turned into a conference hall experience. It created this strange gap between the music and the place. I remember filming part of the concert without moving from my seat, stuck in that chair while the sound coming from the stage was clearly made for bodies standing up.
Both concerts were incredible. But in Saint-Nazaire, standing in the pit, with the sound moving through the crowd and the songs stretching out endlessly, it was something else entirely. You weren’t watching the concert anymore. You were inside it.
