The cure
The Cure? That was my first real musical revelation.
Well, ‘revelation’, I’m not sure if that’s the right word; there’s always been something familiar about The Cure, right from the start, even though we’ve never actually spoken.
The Cure simply had a profound impact on my life.
As a teenager, like many young people of my generation, I found myself with them. I was literally steeped in their music, their lyrics, their world. They were a bit like my musical family, my brothers. They taught me everything I needed to know.

Yes, I was a ‘Curiste’, as they used to say.
And Sir : an ‘official Curiste’!
In other words, one of those who’d get all worked up when people said The Cure were New Wave (even though New Wave included those unbearable Depeche Mode).
No (for me), it was Cold Wave (and with hindsight, it was just because I preferred the name).
Whereas in reality, of course, who cares? It’s just that we were a bit daft, a bit, or rather, quite stubborn.
Another example: when Ian Curtis took his own life, it was unimaginable that New Order would come along afterwards. As if a musician didn’t have the ‘right’ to make a different kind of music, as if Dave Grohl should have changed careers when Kurt left…
Anyway, thank goodness we’ve grown up and became more open-minded.
My first musical revelations were the trilogy: « Seventeen seconds », « Faith » and « Pornography ». I approached these albums as one might approach books. I would immerse myself in them, listening track after track: the story, the poetic flourish.
A short while later, as I was starting to get fed up with feeling down, I gave the debut album « Three Imaginary Boys » a proper listen, and it was a real lifesaver: a clever blend of cold, punk and rock, raw and icy… pure bliss.

Anecdote :
Anecdote:
I remember, in the early 90s I think, I was working at a campsite near Fréjus for a summer job, and whilst going to the supermarket with my grandmother, I came face to face with a rare box set. Luckily, it was August (the month of my birthday), and luckily, my grandmother was an exceptional and generous woman, so we managed to split the cost to buy this box set, which, as I recall, must have cost around 1,500 francs (about €400): it was a lot; I had no choice, I simply had to have it, it was like an unexpected twist of fate.
Some albums didn’t move me quite as much. But there’s always been something surprising and special about each of them. The Cure’s sound has always been unique.
The album « Kiss me Kiss me Kiss me » (which was actually recorded not far from Fréjus in the Var region of France) featured some magnificent songs that have left their mark on generations, but for me, one of their masterpieces is this majestic, mature and radiant album: « Disintegration », a kind of peak.
I was delighted to discover their latest album recently: « Song of a Lost Word ». I love it immensely, it’s authentic, powerful and in tune with today’s world.
Robert Smith recently said in an interview that two more albums were ready, but well, we know the band, it might be another few decades before they’re released. One thing’s for sure, though: if I’m still around, I’ll be there.
